28 Oct 2007 - 100/200 meet report
We held the first of our 100/200 meets under the DCA banner over the weekend of 27th / 28th October.
The last of the previous CoD 100/200 meets had drawn a star studded field of swimmers with meet records being broken almost at will. The thinking was that it would be difficult to live up to last years event. With the stake in the ground set, we managed to again attract a great standard of swimmer from north and south of Dundee (Aberdeen and Fife's top clubs being amongst our guests).
Day 1 on the Saturday started where last year had finished with a new record (going North) in what turned out to be the first of 12 from 28 events. Wow! surely it couldn't upstage last years event?
From our own swimmers, it was undoubtably Jamie Wilmshurst's day setting two of these records in the 13/14 200 free and following up with the new mark in the 100 fly to go with Ross Clark getting off the hook by bettering his own record in the 15+ 100 breast (maybe mornings aren't Ross's thing, Ross will know what we mean !!).
Day 2 and the records just kept on tumbling, with another 12 going. Three of these records went to our own swimmers, Jamie taking his third of he meet in the 100 free which was closely followed with a new mark from Sarah Kelly in the 13/14 200 fly and Ross doubling up with setting a new record in the 200 breast.
Team wise we were up against some top class opposition with the top swimmers from Aberdeen competing as composite teams in South Aberdeenshire Swimming (SAS) and City of Aberdeen Swim Team (CoAST), with local team Perth City and Carnegie from Fife proving to be our main rivals. In the end the two teams from the North showed their combined strength to take the top two places whilst we were a commendable third. SAS narrowly pipped local rivals CoAST to the Best Club award.
The relays at the end of the meet provided a spectular end to the meet with DCA first of all taking the 11/12 relay almost with the last few strokes. This set the more senior teams a challenge with both the 13/14's and the 15+ teams overcoming deficits to come back to take a clean sweep of relay golds. The 13/14's added the last record of the meet into the bargain.
As if this wasn't enough to be going on with, Joe Lipwoth quietly went on his way to take the 'Best Boy' trophy in the tough 13/14 age group. Maybe his most satisfying win was the 200 fly (which he had not done for a while) where he took victory with virtually his outstretched fingers over club teammate Matthew Charnley.
All in all, this must rank as one of the clubs greatest achievements considering the opposition, which will hopefully take us towards one of our goals of having a team that is capable of competing at the top level nationally.
Well done to our own swimmers and all those from other clubs who travelled to make this meet the success that it is proving to be.
